SENIOR LEADERSHIP
Faculty Director
Elizabeth H. Bradley
Dr. Bradley is Faculty Director of GHLI, Director of the Yale Global Health Initiative, Director of Global Health Initiatives at Yale School of Public Health and Professor of Public Health. She is also Master of Branford College. Her research focuses on health delivery and quality improvement. Dr. Bradley has contributed major findings about organizational change and quality of care within the hospital, nursing home and hospice settings. She leads several projects related to health system strengthening around the world, including China, Ethiopia, Liberia, Rwanda, South Africa and the U.K. She is a member of the World Economic Forum, Network of Global Agenda Councils and the Steering Committee for the Open Educational Resources in Public Health Conference, aimed at developing ways to enhance health system delivery in global settings. Dr. Bradley has a B.A. from Harvard, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from Yale University.

Executive Director
Michael Skonieczny
Mike Skonieczny is Executive Director of GHLI. Mr. Skonieczny was the director of public policy for Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, where he led the organization's advocacy efforts focused on expanding U.S. financial support for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Prior to Friends, he was a senior public policy officer at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, where he focused on global AIDS funding, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, pediatric treatment and related issues. Mr. Skonieczny was also a legislative assistant to Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT), staffing her on appropriations and health-related issues. He has a B.A. from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.P.A. from George Washington University.

Director of Field Programs
Erika Linnander
Erika Linnander is Director of Field Programs for GHLI. She is responsible for the development and strategic management of GHLI’s in-country education, research and applied quality improvement programs. She oversees programs in Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, U.K. and the U.S. Also a lecturer at the Yale School of Public Health, Ms. Linnander teaches several courses in GHLI’s certificate and master-level education programs. She is a member of the faculty advisory board for the Eastern Caribbean Health Outcomes Research Network (ECHORN). Before coming to Yale, Ms. Linnander facilitated health management programming in a variety of hospital and health system settings, including efforts in China, Egypt, Haiti, Liberia, Malawi and Nicaragua and also served as a program research and design assistant for the Malawi Ministry of Education. She received her M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and her M.B.A. from the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business.

Director of Field Programs
Jeannie Mantopoulos
Jeannie Mantopoulos is Director of Field Programs for GHLI. She is responsible for the development and implementation of senior leadership development programs, including a partnership with Management Sciences for Health. Previously, Ms. Mantopoulos worked as a project manager for the Master's in Hospital Administration program at Addis Ababa and Jimma Universities in Ethiopia. Ms. Mantopoulos gained experience at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in Intergovernmental Affairs and at Yale as a project manager for the Ethiopian Hospital Management Initiative. She received her B.A. from CUNY Honors College and her M.P.H. from the Yale School of Public Health.

RESEARCH TEAM
Leslie Curry, Senior Research Scientist
Dr. Curry is a Senior Research Scientist at the Yale School of Public Health and a core faculty member of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program at the Yale School of Medicine. Her interests include quality of health care and patient experiences with health care systems in diverse settings. She has substantial experience in health policy and program implementation and evaluation, with emphasis on collaboration with government agencies and policymakers. She is an internationally recognized expert in the use of qualitative and mixed methods in public health and health services research. Dr. Curry has a B.A. from Tufts University and M.P.H. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Connecticut.

Maureen Canavan, Associate Research Scientist
Dr. Canavan is an Associate Research Scientist performing qualitative and quantitative data analysis of GHLI studies. She also conducts secondary data analysis of publicly available datasets to build GHLI’s research in global health. Her previous research focused on the effect of job loss on health outcomes. Before her work at GHLI, she worked in health education and behavior science at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She received an M.P.H. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, School of Public Health and a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. at the Yale School of Public Health.

Emily Cherlin, Research Associate
Dr. Cherlin is a Research Associate with GHLI. Her work focuses on the Strategies to Improve Outcome Performance for Acute Myocardial Infarction Project which examines national trends in hospital care for patients with heart attacks. Dr. Cherlin has worked on projects related to quality improvement employing both qualitative and quantitative research methods. She received her B.A. from North Adams State College and Ph.D. and M.S.W. degrees from the University of Connecticut School of Social Work.

Kristina Talbert-Slagle, Associate Research Scientist
Dr. Talbert-Slagle is an Associate Research Scientist at GHLI and a lecturer at the Yale School of Public Health. Her research focuses on exploring parallels between molecular and social processes of virus spread and host defense. Her recent work has included developing a model to inform the spread of innovation among complex human systems based on the way that a virus spreads among human cells, as well as looking at the dynamics of disease spread in a social network to understand how HIV first establishes infection within the body. Dr. Talbert-Slagle received B.S. and B.A. degrees from the University of Kentucky and a Ph.D. from Yale University.

PROJECT STAFF
Patrick Byam, Project Manager
Patrick Byam works on the long-term development of Ethiopia’s Health Extension Program, a national primary care delivery system focused on providing health care development across the country. He is also part of the ECHORN project, a study that aims to understand more about the prevalence of non-communicable chronic diseases in the Eastern Caribbean. Previously, Patrick helped evaluate the impact of the Ethiopian Millennium Rural Initiative, which focused on developing a model of primary health care for replication throughout Ethiopia. He has also worked in China, El Salvador and Jamaica.

Dana Karen Ciccone, Project Manager
Dana Karen Ciccone coordinates training and research programs with partners in the U.K. and South Africa, as well as with the Leadership, Management and Governance initiative led by Management Sciences for Health. Before coming to GHLI, Dana worked at the World Health Organization and was an assistant director in Yale’s Office of Development. She also worked for UnitedHealthcare and Ingenix, subsidiaries of UnitedHealth Group.

Martha Dale, Director for China Programs
Martha Dale is the Director for China Programs at GHLI. She has primary responsibility for the Yale-Tsinghua University collaborative with the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women program. She is also a lecturer in the health management program at the Yale School of Public Health and has been part of the Ethiopian Hospital Management Initiative and the Liberian Healthcare Management Program. Prior to working at Yale, she served as executive director of: Leeway, an AIDS-dedicated skilled nursing facility and supportive housing provider; Woodlake at Tolland nursing facility; and Duncaster Lifecare Community and as vice president of Hartford Hospital.

Caroline Davis, Senior Fellow in Global Health Management
Caroline (Cari) Davis works with GHLI programs in Rwanda. She is based in Kigali at the central teaching hospital. Previous to her joining GHLI, Cari was director of communications and marketing for a large health system in Colorado. She has also served as executive director of an organization addressing gender-based violence and spent many years providing quality improvement and operational effectiveness consulting to U.S. hospitals.

Yu Liu, Project Manager
Yu Liu works in Beijing, China for the 10,000 Women: The Yale-Tsinghua Certificate Program in International Healthcare Management. Previously, Louie worked at the Boston Medical Center and for PricewaterhouseCoopers and GE Healthcare in China.

Zahirah McNatt, Ethiopia Program Director
Zahirah McNatt directs the Ethiopian Hospital Management Initiative, the Master’s of Hospital and Healthcare Administration at Jimma and Addis Ababa universities and the Ethiopian Healthcare Alliance for Quality. She also conducts health systems research directly linked to health reform priorities in Ethiopia. Previously, Zahirah was a project administrator for Johns Hopkins Medicine International and managed day-to-day operations and program development in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the island of Bermuda.

Marcia Mulligan, Director of U.S. Programs
Marcia Mulligan is the director of U.S. Programs at GHLI. She is responsible for assessing new opportunities, developing new proposals and budgets for U.S. programs, and overseeing the execution of all U.S. programmatic responsibilities. Ms. Mulligan also manages the research portfolio for GHLI reporting, analysis, forecasting, budget development, and compliance monitoring of multiple domestic and international projects to ensure compliance with both University and grant sponsored policies and procedures. Her previous work focused on research at the Yale School of Psychiatry in the division of substance abuse.

Jamila Sykes, Project Manager
Jamila Sykes coordinates programs for GHLI including the annual GHLI Conference and the Visiting Scholars Program. Prior to joining GHLI, Jamila gained experience in stakeholder engagement at ExxonMobil as a public and government affairs advisor, macroeconomic research at the Economist Intelligence Unit, and global health financing at the African Development Bank. Jamila received an M.I.A. from Columbia University and B.A. from Georgetown University.

Rex Wong, Director for Hospital Strengthening
Rex Wong leads GHLI's in-hospital work to improve management capacity and promote quality improvement, with a focus on Rwanda and Ethiopia. He has held previous jobs in several countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Hong Kong and Australia. This work included supporting the establishment of new hospitals in the Middle East; managing a project with the government of Trinidad to strengthen the infrastructure and capacity of the public health care system; and serving as the interim CEO of a private hospital in Panama.
